The Latest

Hurricane season is here! Although we are no strangers to hurricanes, it is still a major concern for us, each time a storm enters the gulf. You learn, by the time that you're 3 years old, here in Cajun country, to have a healthy respect for hurricanes. I packed my hurricane kit on June 1st and sit prepared for the possibility of a major hurricane coming our way. And although it looks like we may dodge the bullet on Alex, we take nothing for granted, and know how fickle these giant storms can be. In the days before Hurricane Rita, they kept saying that the storm was going to Texas, that it was going to Texas. Over and over, they kept saying this.

But it changed course at the last minute, giving our coastal residents only 24 hours to evacuate. My dear friend Cleo had just moved from Abbeville to Cameron and was living out her dream, as a stained glass artist on the beachfront, at Holly Beach. Hurricane Rita destroyed her home completely and everything was washed away and she could not even tell where her property was, after the storm. Also, cou
ntless other people I know, lost everything, too, and some of these folks flooded again, despite having rebuilt their homes in compliance with new hurricane regulations, with Hurricane Ike, and lost everything again! And now this! It is all so mind boggling!

I shudder to think about what will happen, if we do get a big one, this year, considering the oil spill clean-up and continual gushing of raw crude, now at the rate of 1.5 million gallons a day, and that is a conservative estimate! Here is the latest from NBC news.

Wishing ya'll a wonderful, happy week! Merci beaucoup for stopping by!

I don't like bananas, but banana pudding is my husband's favorite! I think you have inspired me to surprise him with your special recipe tomorrow! Hope the hurricane misses both of us! Looks like we will be on the dirty side as it stands now. Blessings to you and all the folks who have suffered through a couple of years of hell now!

It's been very hot here in New England this summer so far, and extremely humid too. So I'd gladly have a piece of that banana pudding pie, it looks so refreshing.

Here's to wishing all hurricanes miss you this summer, so that your beautiful waters can be cleaned and restored.

Banana Cream Pie is one of my absolute favorites!!! So I'm taking this one home with me...

Sure do hope you don't get a big one! I can't imagine it getting any worse than it already is...but I know a storm would make it just that--worse!!! You are all in my prayers...this is simply heartbreaking! Love you, Janine XO

Just back from a week in northern Italy, way behind on any blogging activity. Hot and humid over here and we don't say that very often in the UK!

I have never made a banana cream pie - that is until this afternoon! Thank you for the recipe and know that I continue to keep all of you in my prayers!

Your part of the gulf coast has certainly taken many hits the last several years. Hopefully any and all storms will not come your way until (if) they ever get the oil stopped and cleaned up. Ike wiped Crystal Beach on Boliver Peninsula (off the east end of Galveston Island) off the face of the earth. Knocked out all the water pumping stations in Houston, knocked out the electricity for up to 3 weeks in some parts of the city. I would hate for another storm like that one to hit you now.

beautiful pie, puddin' - love the custard filling with the sliced nanas on top, different.... watching that report reminding me of a t-shirt I saw "BP...finishing off where Katrina left off" or something like that...

Love bananas - they give lots of energy. Your Nanny Bea's Banana Pudding Pie sounds irresistable.
Before I watched the video I read your account of the dangers of hurricanes and how some of your friends lost everything. Such brave people - I respect and admire them more than words can say and with the addied complication of the oil spillage I can understand the anxiety of everyone in the region.

I then watched the video and again there is so much uncertainty and the added problem of the hurricane season may make the leak even worse. Yet I do hope and pray thet in some way the oil itself may prevent the evaporation of warm water to feed the hurricane - it just could be so, who knows?
Glad you liked the amulance sketch on Plato and there is something on Ocean Girl's roast which might amuse you LOL.
One question - is it you in the water on your header picture and if so why are youi not waving to me?
Hugs ~ Eddie

Marguerite, you evil woman - lol! That pie is so sinfully delicious! you have me craving a slice so bad right. We'll be in N.O. thursday and we're sure hoping none of the storms diturb the Gulf Coast this season...the oil is an added scare.

That banana pie sounds so good, and I have a couple of babanas right here that would be delicious in that pie, but I'm not sure what Pet milk is.... milk for pets? Probably not!
I'm assuming its a kind of evaporated milk or condensed milk? And does it contain sugar? And how big are the cans?

Oh I love banana cream pie and it has been so long since I've had some, an old fashioned favorite for sure. I hope alex fizzles out and they get most of the oil up soon, what a horrid cloud hanging over the whole South and beyond, not to mention the flora, fauna and economic consequences both short term and long term.

Good Cook- Thanks, so glad you like it! It won't disappoint! You're welcome and merci for your prayers, cher! We need all of the prayers we can get, right now.

ellen- Thanks for your nice comment! Ike was a huge, horrible storm and completely flooded the entire coast of Louisiana, as well. Since that was just in 2008, I am hoping that we won't get another one, any time soon, too!

Robert- So good to hear from you, cher! Merci beaucoup for the sweet compliments and for stopping by! Glad you enjoyed it! I will!

nanny- Thanks, it really is out of this world, and I hope that you will try it! I know, it's unreal! They are very nice people and my friend grew up there, as well.

Drick- Thanks so much, cher, for your sweet comment! This recipe is a keeper, for sure, and I'm so glad you like it! That T-shirt is not far off from the truth!

Eddie- Merci beaucoup for your kind comment. Our Acadian French ancestors went through a lot worse, so we take our strength from them. But, it is all so scary, not knowing the long term effects of it all. I hope that there will be a silver lining, too, with the storms. I'll never tell! lol

It is utterly terrifying. I just cannot watch it anymore. Unbelievable.

I do want to try that pie. Next dinner party, I think. I need people around to eat it!

Marguerite, crossing my fingers for ya'll and I don't say that lightly. I pray these storms bypass the region this year of all years.

As for your banana pudding pie, it looks divine. Have to make it for the MIL. She gorges on bananas.

Happy 4th!

Whenever we'd visit my mom in Georgia, banana pudding was their favorite dessert. I even did a blog post about it, along with a recipe. I've never tried a pie but this looks good so I've added it to my file.

I remember, a million years ago, when I was a young nurse living in New Orleans, going out with the Red Cross, after Hurricane Camille. I gave about a thousand typhoid shots in one day.

I pray that we have no major hurricanes this year since the damn oil spill seems far from being cleaned up.

Katherine- Sometimes, I can be. lol Thanks, I know that you know exactly what it tastes like, my fellow Cajun. Have a blast in N.O., I know that you will! Happy 4th, cher!

Janine- Merci for stopping by, cher, you are one of a kind! Love you, too!

Shammickite- Thanks, so glad you like it! Pet milk is a brand of evaporated milk that is popular in the South. Any brand would work. Merci for coming by!

Linda- Thanks so much for your nice comment. This pie is one of my faves, too. Thankfully, it stayed south, but it's still very early in the season.

Nancy- I know how you feel, but unfortunately, I must keep up with it, as it affects everything and everyone, here. Glad you liked the pie, cher. Thanks for stopping by!

Joanna- Thanks so much for your sweet comment and for your prayers. We bit the bullet on this one, so it's one down, and who knows how many more, to go!
